I heard a great story from a friend of mine recently.
She went to the Ballet and was astounded at the wonderful talent that was a part of the show. The costumes and dancers were beautiful. The performance was a Ballet that she had seen before and with her performing background she had even helped to produce at one point. She was an educated eye.
Something interesting happened though. As the show went forward she started to notice small lighting errors. She noticed that the sound system was not adjusted properly and other small errors in the delivery of the performance.
As more time went by, the lighting errors became more apparent even to those not with her experienced eye. The music skipped as someone must not have checked the digital copy they were using for errors. At one point, the wrong piece was actually put on for the dancers to move to. (Smaller company, so no live music)
My friend left. She was sad and disappointed.
When she shared her story with me it really reminded me that when we are "performing" in our careers, we RELY on others to ensure the lighting is right, the music is right etc. Sometimes without even realizing it, we allow our support staff and even managers to "sabotage" us with their ineptitude. This is such an opportunity to take a fresh look at things when we realize that this may be going on.
Have we set proper expectations?
Do our team members have a specific job description complete with timelines that they need to be accountable to?
Have we examined the effectiveness of our current "experience" delivery processes at all lately?
I was grateful to have been able to ask these questions in my business and address them.
Cheers!
